Fine-needle aspiration (FNA) of nodules under ultrasound guidance is a quick and straightforward procedure. During the examination, a radiologist uses ultrasound to study the area of interest (e.g., the thyroid) and identify the most suspicious region.
A specialist cytologist then inserts a fine needle into the targeted area under continuous ultrasound monitoring, ensuring the tip reaches the nodule requiring biopsy. Material is then aspirated, preserved using an appropriate technique, and sent for cytological analysis.
FNA (biopsy) results are delivered to the patient within 48 hours.
No preparation is required except for avoiding aspirin or anticoagulant medication (where possible) to minimize the risk of hematoma at the puncture site. There are no restrictions after the procedure.
