URGENT MEDICAL PROBLEM AT SEA: RESPONSE PROCEDURE
- The Coordination Center receives an email from the Captain with a brief description of the seafarer’s health problem
- The Coordinating Doctor gives the first instructions to the Captain or directly to the patient.
- In minimal time from the first call, the Coordinating Doctor connects the patient with the Specialized Doctor of the team.
- The Doctor provides precise instructions related to their specialty and remains on call for the specific case until its final resolution.
- The Doctor handling the case has the ability to intercommunicate with Doctors of all specialties.
- The Doctor may also request visual material (e.g. a photo of a burn).
- The Doctor provides clear and responsible instructions for the care of the patient at sea, the administration of medication, the possible need for transfer to a hospital, or anything else that may be required.
- All instructions are sent with a signed Medical Report.
- The Doctor advises transferring the patient to a hospital only if necessary, avoiding unnecessary course changes of the ship.
- SOS DOCTORS undertake the organization of air transport, repatriation, and patient escort by a Doctor or Nurse to hospitals worldwide.
