SOS gastroenterologists are on call 24 hours a day in Athens to address diseases of the gastrointestinal system at the patient’s location. They arrive promptly, usually within 30 to 45 minutes. The service includes a gastroenterologist’s examination at home, thorough medical history taking, recommendation of the appropriate medication, and provision of all the necessary equipment for performing medical procedures at home.

The gastroenterologist can identify gastrointestinal diseases through a home examination and initiate treatment when necessary. If needed, the doctor may also raise suspicion for conditions that mimic gastrointestinal diseases and request the assistance of the appropriate specialist. In addition to a standard clinical examination, the gastroenterologist can place or replace a bedside nasogastric feeding tube (Levin). More advanced procedures, such as changing a percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy (PEG) device, can also be performed at home. If laboratory tests (such as blood work) or bedside imaging (for example, X-ray or ultrasound) are required, the gastroenterologist can coordinate with the relevant departments to arrange them. Should endoscopic procedures be necessary (gastroscopy, colonoscopy, or endoscopic ultrasound), these can be performed in large private medical centers.
